Celebrate Pride during June
Jun 3, 2024
CMHA Niagara is joined by individuals and organizations worldwide to celebrate the history, courage and diversity of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex and asexual (2SLGBTQIA+) individuals for Pride Month in June.
While Pride festivals across the province recognize Ontario’s 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, it’s important to recognize that these individuals continue to face specific mental health issues and barriers for accessing supports.
2SLGBTQIA+ people are as diverse as the general Canadian population in their experiences of mental health and well-being, but they face higher risks for some mental health issues because of discrimination and the social determinants of health. This includes issues in finding safe, secure housing, appropriate health care, or a supportive work environment, particularly for transgender individuals and with people who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ and have other intersectionalities.
- Consider becoming involved during Pride Month 2024 by actively supporting the community:
- Learn about 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences and histories. share what you’ve learned. Let’s work together to create more inclusive and safer spaces.
- Donate your time or volunteer with charities that support equality. Let’s build solidarity in community together.
- Use your voice to challenge discrimination and encourage those around you to support legislative changes.
- Share positive messages and stories. Use hashtags like #PrideMonth2024 and #LoveIsLove to continue the promotion of inclusivity.
- Check local listings for panels, opportunities for learning about 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, parades and festivals. join marches and be a part of pride.
